The quiet valley of Val Giovo is only 7 km from Vipiteno. In the surrounding area there are numerous destinations for excursions on offer. Via the motorway you reach places and events in all of South Tyrol and beyond the border.
Cascate di Stanghe Gorge
At the entrance to Val Racines is the world’s only gorge cut into pure white marble with waters rushing down the gorge.
Start: Stanghe. Altitude differential: 175 m. approx. 1 hour walking time.
Beginning of May to beginning of November.
Burkhardsklamm Gorge
A natural monument of a special kind in the head of the valley of Ridanna: the gorge named after the former Undersecretary Burkhard can be reached from the museum area in Masseria.
Walking time: approx. 45 minutes
World of Mining, Ridanna Monteneve with opportunity to visit a former mine
The tour of the mine provides a comprehensive insight into 800 years of mining! On offer are a short compact guided tour, a shift guided tour, an adventure day tour and a special tour for children.
Miner’s chapel Santa Maddalena in Ridanna-Gasse
The Gothic chapel on a hill was built in 1480 by the Monteneve miners and showcases a precious screen-altar by Matthias Stöberl. Framed by glaciated high peaks it is a jewel of nature and of art.
Wolfsthurn Castle - State museum for hunting and fishery in Mareta
Wolfsthurn Castle is the only pure Baroque castle in South Tyrol. It is still privately owned. The castle houses the State museum for hunting and fishery.
Castel Tasso and Castel Pietra
Castel Tasso in Campo di Trens is one of the best preserved fortresses in South Tyrol. It is first mentioned in 1100 and was never conquered or destroyed in a period of 1000 years. The castle grounds also include the chapel St. Zeno.
Castel Pietra is situated a little higher than Castel Tasso. Because the fortress is privately owned it cannot be visited. The views, however, are fascinating.
The Multscher Museum displays sections of the altar created in the 15th century by master craftsman Hans Multscher from Ulm for the parish church of Vipiteno. Its four famous altarpieces depict scenes from the life of Mary and the passion of Christ.
The city of Innsbruck and the Swarovski World of Crystal in Wattens invite you to an excursion across the border. Other places to be experienced are the Alpine zoo and the ski jump Bergisel.
The active Augustinian monastery Abbazia di Novacella near Bressanone is approx. 30 minutes away. Of particular note are the abbey church and library. The abbey restaurant Stiftskeller offers tasty delicacies, the abbey shop sells wines from Abbazia di Novacella and other South Tyrolean products.
The capital of Bolzano is approx. 50 minutes by car. Here, the Ötzi museum, Piazza Walther, the fruit market and the arcades with their shops await you.
If you are looking for Mediterranean influences you should visit Merano with the botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff castle. Lake Caldaro and Lake Garda also tempt with Mediterranean flair.
